\u00ab\u00a0We are looking at a very unusual case of cell identity,\u00a0\u00bb says Professor Weitzman, \u00ab\u00a0in which a parasite infects the white blood cells of cows and completely changes their identity so that they begin to replicate like cancer cells.\u00a0\u00bb The Weitzman team has been studying this phenomenon for ten years with the support of the Labex Who Am I?. They discovered that the parasite’s genes are controlled by a new mechanism involving an enzyme called methyltransferase. The enzyme helps turn off the parasite’s genes, which gives the parasite the ability to change the identity of the host cell. \u00ab\u00a0It’s amazing what we can learn by studying how simple parasites can hijack their host cells.\u00a0\u00bb
The new study involves a collaboration between geneticists and biochemists from Universit\u00e9 Paris Cit\u00e9 and would not have been possible without the support of Labex. It was published this month in the journal Nature Communications. The Weitzman team are now looking for drugs that can block enzyme activity and that could help restore the identity of the host cell.<\/p>\n

\u00ab Nous \u00e9tudions un cas tr\u00e8s inhabituel d'identit\u00e9 cellulaire<\/em> \u00bb, explique le professeur Weitzman, \u00ab dans lequel un parasite infecte les globules blancs des vaches et change compl\u00e8tement leur identit\u00e9 pour qu'ils commencent \u00e0 se r\u00e9pliquer comme des cellules canc\u00e9reuses<\/em> \u00bb. L'\u00e9quipe Weitzman \u00e9tudie ce ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne depuis une dizaine d'ann\u00e9es avec le soutien du Labex Who Am I?.<\/em> Ils ont d\u00e9couvert que les g\u00e8nes du parasite sont contr\u00f4l\u00e9s par un nouveau m\u00e9canisme impliquant une enzyme appel\u00e9e m\u00e9thyltransf\u00e9rase. L'enzyme aide \u00e0 d\u00e9sactiver les g\u00e8nes du parasite, ce qui conf\u00e8re au parasite la capacit\u00e9 de modifier l'identit\u00e9 de la cellule h\u00f4te.<\/p>

\"C'est incroyable ce que nous pouvons apprendre en \u00e9tudiant comment de simples parasites peuvent d\u00e9tourner leurs cellules h\u00f4tes<\/em>\". La nouvelle \u00e9tude implique une collaboration entre des g\u00e9n\u00e9ticiens et des biochimistes de l'Universit\u00e9 Paris Cit\u00e9 et n'aurait pas \u00e9t\u00e9 possible sans le soutien du Labex. Elle a \u00e9t\u00e9 publi\u00e9 ce mois-ci dans la revue Nature Communications. L'\u00e9quipe Weitzman recherche maintenant des m\u00e9dicaments capables de bloquer l'activit\u00e9 enzymatique et qui pourraient aider \u00e0 restaurer l'identit\u00e9 de la cellule h\u00f4te.<\/p>
