S\u2019il renvoie d\u2019abord \u00e0 l\u2019irrationalit\u00e9, le mot devient rapidement un talisman pour susciter plus largement la curiosit\u00e9 du lecteur \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9gard de l\u2019inconnu. Le \u00ab myst\u00e8re \u00bb est alors un mot \u00e9trange, aussi omnipr\u00e9sent qu\u2019\u00e9vanescent. Il ouvre \u00e0 tous les retournements, et occupe une place importante dans le roman policier \u00e9mergent.
