Mathieu Duplay est professeur de litt\u00e9rature am\u00e9ricaine et membre du LARCA. Il s\u2019int\u00e9resse aux relations complexes que l\u2019\u00e9criture litt\u00e9raire entretient avec d\u2019autres modes de pens\u00e9e et d\u2019expression (philosophie, th\u00e9ologie, esth\u00e9tique\u2026). Si John Adams compte parmi les compositeurs contemporains les plus en vue, son \u0153uvre continue de susciter des malentendus, en France mais aussi (pour d\u2019autres raisons) dans son pays d\u2019origine. Il est vrai que son th\u00e9\u00e2tre a de quoi d\u00e9router : auteur de six op\u00e9ras, de deux oratorios sc\u00e9niques et d\u2019un musical, Adams y \u00e9labore un art du d\u00e9tournement qui interroge les hi\u00e9rarchies esth\u00e9tiques.<\/p>\n

Ni conservateur, ni rebelle, il pr\u00e9f\u00e8re une pratique du pas de c\u00f4t\u00e9 qui rend cette opposition inop\u00e9rante. Il regarde moins vers l\u2019Europe que vers l\u2019Asie et le monde hispanophone ; il s\u2019agit pour lui d\u2019op\u00e9rer un d\u00e9centrement f\u00e9cond, de diriger l\u2019attention vers les marges de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 et de la culture am\u00e9ricaines afin de faire comprendre l\u2019importance de ce qui s\u2019y joue. C\u2019est ce qui conf\u00e8re \u00e0 son th\u00e9\u00e2tre sa remarquable port\u00e9e critique. Si Adams s\u2019y plie aux conventions formelles du grand op\u00e9ra historique ou de l\u2019oratorio, ce n\u2019est pas par conservatisme, mais pour en faire un miroir tendu \u00e0 l\u2019Am\u00e9rique \u00e0 la faveur d\u2019une entreprise de d\u00e9familiarisation qui doit beaucoup \u00e0 Brecht. D\u2019o\u00f9 son extr\u00eame int\u00e9r\u00eat pour la litt\u00e9rature, dont il appr\u00e9cie plus que tout la capacit\u00e9 de questionnement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
