Alors que J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851) excelle dans le genre du paysage, Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) porte l\u2019art du portrait \u00e0 de semblables sommets de cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9 et d\u2019inventivit\u00e9. Enfant prodige, il succ\u00e8de \u00e0 Joshua Reynolds comme \u00ab peintre ordinaire de Sa Majest\u00e9 \u00bb le roi George III \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e2ge de 18 ans et devient rapidement le principal portraitiste de son temps, \u00e9lu \u00e0 l\u2019unanimit\u00e9 pr\u00e9sident de la Royal Academy of Arts en 1820. En 1814, le Prince R\u00e9gent lui commande une s\u00e9rie de portraits de toutes les personnalit\u00e9s europ\u00e9ennes ayant contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 la d\u00e9faite de Napol\u00e9on. Aujourd\u2019hui expos\u00e9es dans la Waterloo Chamber du ch\u00e2teau de Windsor, elles offrent un t\u00e9moignage exceptionnel de l\u2019incarnation du pouvoir au d\u00e9but de l\u2019Europe moderne. Lawrence est \u00e9galement un remarquable observateur de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 de la R\u00e9gence, avec une sensibilit\u00e9 exceptionnelle pour les repr\u00e9sentations intimistes de femmes et d\u2019enfants, \u00e0 l\u2019huile, au pastel ou \u00e0 la craie, qui explorent de mani\u00e8re unique les fragilit\u00e9s de l\u2019\u00e2ge et du genre.
