Le 5 octobre 1864, un violent cyclone s\u2019abat sur la plaine du Gange. Calcutta, capitale de l\u2019Empire britannique en Inde, est d\u00e9vast\u00e9e. \u00ab\u00a0Le jardin botanique de Calcutta figure d\u00e9sormais parmi les choses du pass\u00e9\u00a0\u00bb, lit-on dans le Gardener\u2019s Chronicle. Trois d\u00e9cennies plus tard, le jardin \u00e9tait pourtant devenu l\u2019un des plus \u00e9minents symboles de l\u2019Empire britannique. Les visiteurs affluaient pour admirer un arbre immense \u00e0 l\u2019allure de for\u00eat : le grand banian.
Son herbier, riche de milliers de sp\u00e9cimens venus de tous les territoires imp\u00e9riaux, en faisait un haut lieu de la classification botanique. Ses directeurs \u00e9taient tenus de contribuer \u00e0 l\u2019essor \u00e9conomique du Raj en tentant d\u2019acclimater de nouvelles esp\u00e8ces et d\u2019am\u00e9liorer le rendement des r\u00e9coltes. Ses responsables en \u00e9crivaient l\u2019histoire comme celle d\u2019un lieu colonial mod\u00e8le qui servait la mission civilisatrice de l\u2019empire. Ce livre \u00e9tudie le r\u00f4le \u00e0 la fois symbolique et \u00e9conomique qu\u2019a jou\u00e9 le jardin botanique de Calcutta dans le dispositif d\u2019un empire alors \u00e0 son apog\u00e9e.
A l\u2019aide d\u2019archives inexploit\u00e9es jusqu\u2019ici, Marine Bell\u00e9go nous plonge dans le quotidien \u00e0 la fois monotone et tourment\u00e9 de l\u2019un des plus grands jardins botaniques coloniaux. Elle met ainsi au jour les innombrables tensions qui parcouraient ce microcosme imp\u00e9rial dysfonctionnel, faisant un sort aux \u00e9checs d\u2019acclimatation, aux d\u00e9sastres logistiques, aux probl\u00e8mes de main-d\u2019oeuvre et \u00e0 la duret\u00e9 implacable des relations humaines dans la sph\u00e8re coloniale.
