N\u00e9 en 1931, Fran\u00e7ois Durand-Dast\u00e8s a pass\u00e9 son enfance \u00e0 Tarbes avant de venir faire ses \u00e9tudes \u00e0 Paris, d\u2019abord en hypokh\u00e2gne au lyc\u00e9e Henri IV, puis en licence d\u2019histoire avant de bifurquer vers la g\u00e9ographie. Apr\u00e8s son agr\u00e9gation, il est nomm\u00e9 professeur de g\u00e9ographie au lyc\u00e9e Henri IV \u00e0 Poitiers en 1954 et obtient un poste d\u2019assistant \u00e0 l\u2019Institut de G\u00e9ographie en 1957. Il y entame des travaux sur le ph\u00e9nom\u00e8ne de la mousson et se passionne pour l\u2019Inde (il a publi\u00e9 un Que sais-je<\/em> sur l\u2019Inde d\u00e8s 1965). Par engagement, il choisit, lors de la scission de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Paris Cit\u00e9 en 1969, de se joindre \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Paris 7, sur le campus de Jussieu. Le projet scientifique de cette nouvelle universit\u00e9, associant sciences dures et sciences humaines, lui paraissait en effet repr\u00e9senter un enjeu essentiel sur le plan scientifique. Il a jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le majeur dans le d\u00e9veloppement et la vie du d\u00e9partement de g\u00e9ographie, en tant que ma\u00eetre de conf\u00e9rences puis professeur, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 sa retraite en 1999.<\/p>\n

Ayant r\u00e9alis\u00e9 l\u2019\u00e9norme potentiel de la notion de syst\u00e8me dans ses travaux de climatologie, il d\u00e9veloppera la d\u00e9marche syst\u00e9mique en lui apportant des fondements th\u00e9oriques solides et en proposant diverses applications en climatologie et dans le domaine de la g\u00e9ographie humaine, tant \u00e0 propos de ses terrains en Inde, dont il \u00e9tait un sp\u00e9cialiste reconnu, que sur l\u2019espace fran\u00e7ais (notamment en g\u00e9ographie rurale). Il a \u00e9t\u00e9 innovant dans le domaine de la g\u00e9ographie quantitative et a contribu\u00e9 \u00e0 la diffusion de ses m\u00e9thodes, tout en les associant \u00e9troitement \u00e0 une r\u00e9flexion \u00e9pist\u00e9mologique approfondie. Son apport pour la discipline est ainsi consid\u00e9rable et il a form\u00e9 plusieurs g\u00e9n\u00e9rations d\u2019\u00e9tudiants et de doctorants, dont plusieurs membres de G\u00e9ographie-cit\u00e9s. Il a notamment jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le cl\u00e9 dans le DEA ATEG (\u00ab Analyses th\u00e9oriques et \u00e9pist\u00e9mologiques en g\u00e9ographie \u00bb) o\u00f9 il a enseign\u00e9 de 1986 \u00e0 2006.<\/p>\n

Fran\u00e7ois Durand-Dast\u00e8s a \u00e9galement \u00e9t\u00e9 tr\u00e8s actif sur un plan institutionnel : directeur-adjoint de l\u2019Institut de G\u00e9ographie de 1968 \u00e0 1970, il est responsable du d\u00e9partement de G\u00e9ographie de Paris 7 de 1975 \u00e0 1981, puis le premier pr\u00e9sident de l\u2019Association Fran\u00e7aise pour le d\u00e9veloppement de la g\u00e9ographie en 1982 et membre \u00e9lu du Comit\u00e9 National du CNRS de 1984 \u00e0 1988. Il a co-fond\u00e9 le GREMOS (Groupe de recherches sur les mod\u00e8les et les syst\u00e8mes) et rejoint d\u00e8s 1979 le Groupe Dupont, foyer historique de diffusion de l\u2019analyse spatiale en France et de r\u00e9flexion th\u00e9orique en g\u00e9ographie. Membre de l\u2019UMR G\u00e9ographie-cit\u00e9s<\/a> depuis sa cr\u00e9ation (en 1986, sous le nom d\u2019\u00e9quipe P.A.R.I.S.), il y est rest\u00e9 actif apr\u00e8s sa retraite. Il \u00e9tait \u00e9galement associ\u00e9 au Centre des \u00c9tudes de l\u2019Inde et de l\u2019Asie du Sud de l\u2019EHESS o\u00f9 il fut tr\u00e8s pr\u00e9sent et s\u2019attacha \u00e0 d\u00e9velopper les recherches en g\u00e9ographie dans une orientation tr\u00e8s pluridisciplinaire. Il a particip\u00e9 activement aux comit\u00e9s de r\u00e9daction de L\u2018Espace G\u00e9ographique, de Mappemonde et de Cybergeo, y compris durant cette derni\u00e8re ann\u00e9e 2021, ainsi qu’au dictionnaire en ligne Hypergeo.
Climatologue visionnaire, il avait d\u00e9nonc\u00e9 l\u2019impact n\u00e9gatif de la production des \u00e9nergies fossiles sur le climat en 1971 dans un article intitul\u00e9 \u00ab La pollution atmosph\u00e9rique et le climat \u00bb, article repris trente ans plus tard, dans une \u00e9tude publi\u00e9e dans la revue scientifique Global Environmental Change, montrant que Total Energies, bien que consciente des risques d\u00e8s 1971, avait mis en doute les donn\u00e9es scientifiques qui mena\u00e7aient ses activit\u00e9s. G\u00e9ographie-cit\u00e9s a publi\u00e9 un entretien avec Fran\u00e7ois Durand-Dast\u00e8s en novembre 2021 sur ce sujet.[1]<\/strong>
Fran\u00e7ois Durand-Dast\u00e8s a publi\u00e9 de nombreux travaux, des ouvrages et des articles, toujours innovants, sur la g\u00e9ographie de l\u2019Inde et des climats, sur les syst\u00e8mes et les temporalit\u00e9s, ainsi que sur les mod\u00e8les. La g\u00e9ographie fran\u00e7aise perd une de ses grandes figures intellectuelles, nous perdons un coll\u00e8gue et un ami. Nous lui sommes infiniment reconnaissants pour son action, ses contributions toujours tr\u00e8s riches et pour tout ce qu\u2019il nous a transmis au cours de ces ann\u00e9es, avec bienveillance et chaleur. <\/p>\n
