z_index_tablet=\u00a0\u00bb500″]<\/p>\n L\u2019enthousiasme de Bernd Sch\u00f6llhorn est intact quand il \u00e9voque cette nuit dans la for\u00eat tropicale au Nord du Vietnam, lorsque muni d\u2019une simple lampe UV, il a pour la premi\u00e8re fois d\u00e9couvert les nids de gu\u00eapes fluorescents. L\u2019intensit\u00e9 lumineuse \u00e9tait telle qu\u2019il a tout d\u2019abord dout\u00e9 de son origine biologique. Des mesures de rendement quantique men\u00e9es plus tard en laboratoire par le chercheur Willy Daney de Marcillac, expert en optique (Sorbonne Universit\u00e9) ont en effet montr\u00e9 que la fluorescence \u00e9mise par les nids de gu\u00eapes sous la lumi\u00e8re ultraviolette \u00e9tait trois fois plus intense que tous les ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes de fluorescence connus dans le monde animal terrestre.<\/p>\n Le travail d\u2019identification men\u00e9 avec l\u2019entomologiste Lien Thi Phuong Nguyen, experte en taxonomie des frelons asiatiques (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) a permis de reconna\u00eetre l\u2019esp\u00e8ce des polistes (gu\u00eapes \u00e0 papier) P.<\/em> brunetus<\/em> et dont les nids, appel\u00e9s nids de papier (paper nests<\/em>) ont la particularit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00eatre ouverts en alv\u00e9oles et d\u00e9pourvus de la protection de cellulose que l\u2019on retrouve dans les nids des autres esp\u00e8ces.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n \u00a9 Sh\u00f6llhorn, Berthier et Nguyen<\/p><\/div>\n \u00c0 l\u2019\u0153il nu, ces nids sont d\u2019une couleur blanc laiteux et mat. Sous la lumi\u00e8re UV en revanche, ils irradient d\u2019une vive lueur verte visible jusqu\u2019\u00e0 pr\u00e8s 20 m\u00e8tres. Cette lumi\u00e8re peut \u00eatre \u00e9galement bleut\u00e9e et d\u2019une moindre intensit\u00e9 pour les nids d\u2019autres esp\u00e8ces de polistes : le P.<\/em> canadensis<\/em> en Guyane fran\u00e7aise et le P.<\/em> gallicus<\/em> dans le Sud de la France.<\/p>\n Les nids en eux-m\u00eames ne sont pas fluorescents : ce sont les prot\u00e9ines de soie qui constituent les opercules des alv\u00e9oles des nids – s\u00e9cr\u00e9t\u00e9es par les larves – qui \u00e9mettent la lueur fluorescente. Cette membrane de soie prot\u00e8ge les larves durant leur m\u00e9tamorphose, avant d\u2019atteindre leur forme adulte. Dans ce moment de grande vuln\u00e9rabilit\u00e9, la soie forme un bouclier contre l\u2019environnement ext\u00e9rieur\u00a0: les intemp\u00e9ries, les pr\u00e9dateurs ou les parasites et bact\u00e9ries.<\/p>\n L\u2019enjeu aujourd\u2019hui est de d\u00e9couvrir le r\u00f4le et les fonctions de cette fluorescence et \u00e0 quel moment elle devient significative. Les insectes, contrairement \u00e0 l\u2019\u00eatre humain voient l\u2019ultra-violet. L\u2019une des hypoth\u00e8ses avanc\u00e9es est celle, \u00e9ventuelle, d\u2019une protection des larves contre les effets n\u00e9fastes des rayons UV. Les nids sont en effet situ\u00e9s dans les parties \u00e9lev\u00e9es et clairsem\u00e9es de la for\u00eat, soumises \u00e0 une forte irradiation solaire. Une autre hypoth\u00e8se serait celle d\u2019une sorte de \u00ab\u00a0phare\u00a0\u00bb pour orienter les gu\u00eapes rentrant au nid.
