Baptiste Rouchi\u00e9, a PhD student in a CIFRE thesis allying Air Liquide HealthCare, ITODYS and IMRB, agreed to conduct this interview at the end of a project lasting several months with a group of EIDD students, including Louka Yilmaz, on the search for ways to synthesize artificial skin in order to support him in his thesis work.<\/p>\n

What is your current professional status?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I am currently working on a CIFRE thesis, a project funded by a company. I am working on a collaboration between 3 laboratories: the Explore Center of Air Liquide HealthCare, the laboratory of the Mondor Hospital in Cr\u00e9teil IMRB (Mondor Institute of Biomedical Research) and the laboratory of the Universit\u00e9 Paris Cit\u00e9<\/em> ITODYS (Interfaces Treatments Organization and Systems Dynamics). The objective of this project is to use additive manufacturing methods (3D printing, inkjet printing, screen printing) to design a test bench for medical devices.<\/p>\n

How is your research topic based on materials?<\/strong><\/p>\n

What I do is completely related to materials. The methods used are based on research in materials. As for the applications, they bring knowledge in the biomedical field.<\/p>\n

What does it mean to be in a thesis?<\/strong><\/p>\n

First of all, there is no typical day. That’s what I like about it too. Every week I work on my project. Depending on the tasks, I go to the relevant labs. Whether it’s to acquire knowledge, build and develop devices or test them.<\/p>\n

What are the specificities of the private\/public partnership of the CIFRE thesis?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The biggest advantage is to have a link between academic research and research for a business-related application, which in this case makes it possible to improve patients’ lives. Moreover, as the project is innovative, there is a contribution of knowledge that will remain within the team and if a patent is filed, it will be shared between the different components. Finally, the collaboration brings visibility to everyone and allows to widen the fields of activities thanks to the developed knowledge and specialities.<\/p>\n

In the case of the CIFRE thesis, is it necessary to produce a marketable product at the end?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The objective is to have a finished project. Marketable it is not sure, but which in any case will make it possible to carry out the test benches.<\/p>\n

What is your educational background?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Before entering the EIDD (Denis Diderot Engineering School), I did the intensive preparation courses for the <\/span>Grandes Ecoles<\/span><\/i> entry exam<\/span> named CUPGE (University Preparatory Cycle for the Grandes Ecoles<\/em>) at the University of Paris Diderot (now Universit\u00e9 Paris Cit\u00e9<\/em>). This training, compared to the classical CPGE (Preparatory Cycle for the Grandes Ecoles<\/em>), allowed me to develop my autonomy and my work rigor because we were more left to ourselves.<\/p>\n

Why did you choose to do a thesis after your studies?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I wanted to be able to see all the ins and outs of my project over a period of three years, while at the same time acquiring skills in the various fields that revolve around my project. I knew the field that I liked but it is above all the realization of a project from A to Z and the challenge of the thesis that made me opt for this project.<\/p>\n

What does your background bring to the realization of your thesis?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Beyond the scientific knowledge, being the only one responsible for my work and gravitating between 3 instances of which I am the link, it is necessary to be autonomous.<\/p>\n

Coming from an engineering school, was it difficult to orientate yourself towards a thesis?<\/strong><\/p>\n

No, it was very natural. My engineering training did not lock me into a set career path. I did an internship at the end of my second year in an academic laboratory and my end-of-study internship in a mixed unit: half in an R&D center and half at CNRS. This last internship introduced me to the world of the CIFRE thesis and doctor-engineers. These experiences reinforced my desire to do a thesis.<\/p>\n

To find your thesis, was being an engineer a positive or negative point?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I don’t think that there is a prohibitive path between engineering school and master’s degree. They are different profiles that both have advantages and disadvantages. It is rather the vision that you have of the project and how you will apply your knowledge that is important. In my case, it was my experiences that allowed me to find my thesis.<\/p>\n

To get to where you are now, do you think that a bachelor-master course would have been more beneficial to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n

No, first of all because my training did not push me to be an engineer by profession but also because it brought me knowledge and working methods that I use today for my project. An academic course would have surely brought me different things, but I don’t regret my course at all.<\/p>\n

At the end of your thesis, is it possible to continue your project with the company and would you like that?<\/strong><\/p>\n

It’s possible, but it remains to be seen under which formula, if there is still a collaboration with the university it will be more complicated. At the end of the three years, I might want to change projects or vary the fields, but for the moment I’m more focused on the present and trying to finish in time. Nevertheless, one of the advantages of the CIFRE thesis is that it allows me to meet people in companies to have contacts and continue if we are interested.<\/p>\n

At the end of the thesis, do you plan to work for a company?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes indeed, that’s what happens at the end of a CIFRE thesis. I don’t know of any CIFRE doctoral students who have gone on to a university position after their thesis, so I don’t know if it happens.<\/p>\n

What would you say to someone who is hesitating to embark on a career in materials research?<\/strong><\/p>\n

What I like about materials is the multidisciplinarity and the many broad and varied fields of application. And it’s also a challenge for tomorrow’s world with innovative materials that will help solve economic and environmental problems, etc. I don’t see any negative points in this field unless, of course, the person isn’t interested in doing research. It is a very interesting field, among many others.<\/p>\n

Je suis actuellement en th\u00e8se CIFRE, projet financ\u00e9 par une entreprise. Je travaille sur une collaboration entre 3 laboratoires\u00a0: le Centre Explore de Air liquide HealthCare, le laboratoire de l\u2019h\u00f4pital Mondor de Cr\u00e9teil IMRB (Institut Mondor de Recherche Biomedical) et le laboratoire de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Paris Cit\u00e9 ITODYS (Interfaces Traitements Organisation et Dynamique des Syst\u00e8mes). L\u2019objectif\u00a0de ce projet et de se servir des m\u00e9thodes de fabrication additives (impression 3D, impression jet d\u2019encre, s\u00e9rigraphie) pour concevoir un banc de test pour les dispositifs m\u00e9dicaux.<\/p>

En quoi ton sujet de recherche repose sur les mat\u00e9riaux\u00a0?<\/strong><\/p>

Ce que je fais c\u2019est compl\u00e8tement li\u00e9 aux mat\u00e9riaux. Les m\u00e9thodes utilis\u00e9es reposent sur la recherche dans les mat\u00e9riaux. Les applications quant \u00e0 elles, apporteraient des connaissances dans le domaine biom\u00e9dical.<\/p>

En quoi \u00e7a consiste d\u2019\u00eatre en th\u00e8se\u00a0?<\/strong><\/p>

Tout d\u2019abord, il n\u2019y a pas de journ\u00e9e de type. C\u2019est ce qui me plait aussi. Chaque semaine j\u2019avance sur mon projet. En fonction des t\u00e2ches je vais dans les labos concern\u00e9s. Que ce soit pour acqu\u00e9rir des connaissances, construire et d\u00e9velopper des dispositifs ou les tester.<\/p>

Quelles sont les sp\u00e9cificit\u00e9s du partenariat priv\u00e9\/public de la th\u00e8se CIFRE\u00a0?<\/strong><\/p>

Le plus gros avantage c\u2019est d\u2019avoir un lien entre la recherche acad\u00e9mique et la recherche pour une application li\u00e9e au business, qui permet dans ce cas d\u2019am\u00e9liorer la vie des patients. Par ailleurs, le projet \u00e9tant innovant, il y a un apport de connaissance qui restera dans l\u2019\u00e9quipe et s\u2019il y a d\u00e9p\u00f4t de brevet, un partage sera fait entre les diff\u00e9rentes composantes. Finalement, la collaboration apporte \u00e0 chacun de la visibilit\u00e9 et permet d\u2019\u00e9largir les domaines d\u2019activit\u00e9s gr\u00e2ce aux connaissances et sp\u00e9cialit\u00e9s d\u00e9velopp\u00e9es.<\/p>

Dans le cas de la th\u00e8se CIFRE, faut-il obligatoirement rendre \u00e0 la fin un produit commercialisable\u00a0?<\/strong><\/p>

L\u2019objectif est d\u2019avoir un projet fini. Commercialisable ce n\u2019est pas s\u00fbr, mais qui en tout cas permettra de r\u00e9aliser les bancs de tests.<\/p>

Quel est ton parcours scolaire\u00a0?<\/strong><\/p>

Avant de rentrer \u00e0 l\u2019EIDD (Ecole d\u2019Ing\u00e9nieur Denis Diderot), j\u2019ai effectu\u00e9 le cycle pr\u00e9paratoire CUPGE (Cycle Universitaire Pr\u00e9paratoire aux Grandes Ecoles) de l\u2019universit\u00e9 Paris Cit\u00e9 Diderot (actuelle Universit\u00e9 Paris Cit\u00e9). Ce cycle, par rapport aux CPGE classiques, m\u2019a permis dans mon cas de d\u00e9velopper mon autonomie et ma rigueur de travail car nous \u00e9tions d\u2019avantage livr\u00e9s \u00e0 nous-m\u00eame.<\/p>

Pourquoi avoir choisi une th\u00e8se\u00a0pour la suite de tes \u00e9tudes ?<\/strong><\/p>

Je voulais sur trois ans pouvoir voir tous les tenants et les aboutissants de mon projet tout en emmagasinant des comp\u00e9tences dans les diff\u00e9rents domaines qui gravitent autour de mon projet. Je connaissais alors le domaine qui me plaisait mais c\u2019est avant tout la r\u00e9alisation d\u2019un projet de A \u00e0 Z et le challenge de la th\u00e8se qui m\u2019a fait opter pour ce projet.<\/p>

Qu\u2019est-ce que ton parcours t\u2019apporte dans la r\u00e9alisation de ta th\u00e8se\u00a0?<\/strong><\/p>

Au-del\u00e0 des connaissances scientifiques, \u00e9tant le seul responsable de mon travail et gravitant entre 3 instances dont je fais le lien, il est n\u00e9cessaire d\u2019\u00eatre autonome.<\/p>

Venant d\u2019une \u00e9cole d\u2019ing\u00e9nieur, est-ce que \u00e7a a \u00e9t\u00e9 difficile de t\u2019orienter vers une th\u00e8se\u00a0?<\/strong><\/p>

Non, \u00e7a s\u2019est fait tr\u00e8s naturellement. La formation d\u2019ing\u00e9nieur ne m\u2019a pas enferm\u00e9e dans une voie professionnelle toute trac\u00e9e. J\u2019avais fait un stage en fin de deuxi\u00e8me ann\u00e9e en laboratoire acad\u00e9mique et mon stage de fin d\u2019\u00e9tude en unit\u00e9 mixte\u00a0: \u00e0 moiti\u00e9 en centre R&D et \u00e0 moiti\u00e9 au CNRS. Ce dernier stage m\u2019a introduit au monde de la th\u00e8se CIFRE et des docteurs-ing\u00e9nieurs. Ces exp\u00e9riences m\u2019ont confort\u00e9es dans mon souhait de la r\u00e9alisation d\u2019une th\u00e8se.<\/p>

Pour trouver ta th\u00e8se, \u00eatre ing\u00e9nieur a \u00e9t\u00e9 un point plut\u00f4t positif ou n\u00e9gatif\u00a0?<\/strong><\/p>

Je ne pense pas qu\u2019il y a de voie r\u00e9dhibitoire entre \u00e9cole d\u2019ing\u00e9nieur et master. Ce sont des profils diff\u00e9rents qui pr\u00e9sente des avantages et des inconv\u00e9nients tous deux. C\u2019est plut\u00f4t la vision que tu as du projet et comment tu vas appliquer tes connaissances qui est important. Dans mon cas, ce sont mes exp\u00e9riences qui m\u2019ont permis de trouver ma th\u00e8se.<\/p>

Pour arriver o\u00f9 tu en es \u00e0 pr\u00e9sent est-ce que tu penses qu\u2019un parcours licence-master t\u2019aurais \u00e9t\u00e9 plus b\u00e9n\u00e9fique\u00a0?<\/strong><\/p>

Non, tout d\u2019abord parce que ma formation ne m\u2019a pas pouss\u00e9e \u00e0 \u00eatre ing\u00e9nieur de profession mais aussi parce qu\u2019elle m\u2019a apport\u00e9 des connaissances et des m\u00e9thodes de travail que j\u2019utilise aujourd\u2019hui pour mon projet. Un parcours acad\u00e9mique m\u2019aurait surement apport\u00e9 des choses diff\u00e9rentes, mais je ne regrette pas du tout mon cursus.<\/p>

\u00c0 l\u2019issu de ta th\u00e8se est-il possible de poursuivre ton projet avec l\u2019entreprise et est-ce que cela te plairait\u00a0?<\/strong><\/p>

C\u2019est possible, mais \u00e0 voir sous quelle formule, s\u2019il y a toujours une collaboration avec l\u2019universit\u00e9 ce sera plus compliqu\u00e9. \u00c0 l\u2019issu des trois ans je souhaiterai peut-\u00eatre changer de projet ou varier les domaines mais pour le moment je reste plut\u00f4t concentr\u00e9 sur le moment pr\u00e9sent et cherche \u00e0 finir dans les temps. Oui effectivement, c\u2019est plut\u00f4t ce qui se fait \u00e0 l\u2019issu d\u2019une th\u00e8se CIFRE. Je ne connais pas de doctorant CIFRE qui se sont dirig\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019issu de leur th\u00e8se vers un poste \u00e0 l\u2019universit\u00e9 donc je ne sais pas si cela se fait.<\/p>

Que dirais-tu \u00e0 quelqu\u2019un qui h\u00e9site \u00e0 se lancer dans un parcours dans la recherche sur les mat\u00e9riaux\u00a0?<\/strong><\/p>

Moi ce qui me plait dans les mat\u00e9riaux c\u2019est la pluridisciplinarit\u00e9 et les nombreux domaines d\u2019applications larges et vari\u00e9s. Et c\u2019est aussi des enjeux pour le monde de demain avec les mat\u00e9riaux innovants qui permettront de r\u00e9soudre des probl\u00e9matiques \u00e9conomiques, environnementales, etc\u2026 Je ne vois pas de point n\u00e9gatif \u00e0 ce domaine sauf si bien s\u00fbr la personne n\u2019ai pas int\u00e9ress\u00e9 par faire de la recherche. C\u2019est un domaine tr\u00e8s int\u00e9ressant, parmi plein d\u2019autres.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>
