Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Bach m\u00e9decin et scientifique a d\u00e9but\u00e9 sa carri\u00e8re dans l’\u00e9quipe de Jean Hamburger \u00e0 l’h\u00f4pital Necker Enfants Malades. Apr\u00e8s une th\u00e8se de sciences brillante il devint rapidement professeur d’immunologie (Universit\u00e9 Paris Descartes), chef d’un service d’immunologie clinique et directeur d’une unit\u00e9 de recherche (\u00a0\u00bb U25 \u00bb) affili\u00e9e \u00e0 l’lnserm et au CNRS sur ce m\u00eame site.<\/p>\n

Les premiers travaux de Jean Fran\u00e7ois Bach ont port\u00e9 sur l’identification d’hormones thymiques impliqu\u00e9es dans le d\u00e9veloppement des lymphocytes T. Il s’est tourn\u00e9 ensuite vers l’\u00e9tude des m\u00e9canismes des maladies auto-immunes dont il fut l’un des pionniers. Il s’est plus particuli\u00e8rement int\u00e9ress\u00e9 au diab\u00e8te de type 1, une maladie auto immune provoqu\u00e9e par l’attaque des cellules du pancr\u00e9as, productrices de l’insuline par le syst\u00e8me immunitaire. Ses travaux exp\u00e9rimentaux lui ont permis de proposer et de mettre en \u0153uvre d\u00e8s les ann\u00e9es 1980 un traitement immunosuppresseur par la cyclosporine, puis par anticorps ciblant les lymphocytes T. Les r\u00e9sultats obtenus ont \u00e9t\u00e9 suffisamment probants pour que les autorit\u00e9s de sant\u00e9 r\u00e9glementaires am\u00e9ricaines autorisent, depuis cette ann\u00e9e l’utilisation de cette approche th\u00e9rapeutique, un aboutissement d’un long chemin dont Jean Fran\u00e7ois Bach \u00e9tait l\u00e9gitimement fier.<\/p>\n

En parall\u00e8le, Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Bach a montr\u00e9, sur la base de donn\u00e9es \u00e9pid\u00e9miologiques et exp\u00e9rimentales que l’environnement microbien et en particulier la survenue d’infections modulait le risque de maladies auto-immunes, inflammatoires et allergiques. Il a propos\u00e9 une \u00ab th\u00e9orie de l’hygi\u00e8ne \u00bb selon laquelle notre environnement aseptis\u00e9 rend compte de l’augmentation de la pr\u00e9valence de ces maladies immunologiques.<\/p>\n

Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Bach a form\u00e9 de nombreux \u00e9l\u00e8ves, il fut un chercheur f\u00e9cond et influent dans les communaut\u00e9s m\u00e9dicale et scientifique aussi bien nationales qu’internationales. Le trait\u00e9 d’immunologie qu’il a r\u00e9dig\u00e9 constitue un ouvrage de r\u00e9f\u00e9rence, de nombreuses fois r\u00e9\u00e9dit\u00e9s.<\/p>\n

En 1985, \u00e9lu \u00e0 l’Acad\u00e9mie des sciences, il en fut un membre tr\u00e8s actif. En r\u00e9ponses aux questions du Pr\u00e9sident de la R\u00e9publique sur les d\u00e9fis du 21\u00e8me si\u00e8cle, il coordonna le texte sant\u00e9 du \u00ab comit\u00e9 2000 \u00bb qui sera remis au Pr\u00e9sident. Secr\u00e9taire perp\u00e9tuel de 2006 \u00e0 2015, il a port\u00e9 \u00e0 haut niveau le rayonnement de l’Acad\u00e9mie des sciences, il en \u00e9tait une figure tut\u00e9laire. Esprit ouvert, curieux il s’int\u00e9ressait aux disciplines autres que la sienne et posait des questions pertinentes toujours avec humour lorsqu’il ignorait la r\u00e9ponse. Sous un caract\u00e8re fort et tremp\u00e9, ne supportant pas l’impr\u00e9cision, il \u00e9tait profond\u00e9ment humain. Les s\u00e9ances et les prix \u00e9tant sous sa responsabilit\u00e9, il \u00e9tait sensible \u00e0 l’\u00e9quilibre des disciplines et supervisait avec soin les jurys. Faisant suite au comit\u00e9 science et soci\u00e9t\u00e9, il cr\u00e9e en 2011 le comit\u00e9 science \u00e9thique et soci\u00e9t\u00e9, qui aborde les questions d’int\u00e9grit\u00e9 scientifique auxquelles, avec Pierre Corvol, il \u00e9tait tr\u00e8s attach\u00e9. Il y associe les r\u00e9seaux d’acad\u00e9mies \u00e9trang\u00e8res. En 2014, il met en place le Comit\u00e9 science et bios\u00e9curit\u00e9 de l’Acad\u00e9mie des sciences qui fait suite au Comit\u00e9 science et s\u00e9curit\u00e9 pour alerter sur les dangers des menaces biologiques qui planent sur les soci\u00e9t\u00e9s humaines. Sensible \u00e0 la nature coll\u00e9giale de notre acad\u00e9mie, il a su, avec une autorit\u00e9 naturelle, la faire \u00e9voluer pour r\u00e9pondre aux pr\u00e9occupations de notre \u00e9poque.<\/p>\n
