En 1949, bien qu\u2019elle se proclame en rupture radicale vis-\u00e0-vis des r\u00e9gimes qui l\u2019ont pr\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9e, la R\u00e9publique populaire de Chine reprend \u00e0 son compte les objectifs formul\u00e9s par les r\u00e9formateurs et les r\u00e9volutionnaires de la premi\u00e8re moiti\u00e9 du XXe<\/sup>\u00a0si\u00e8cle. La diff\u00e9rence tient aux moyens mobilis\u00e9s pour y parvenir. Dans les faits, la pratique du totalitarisme par Mao Zedong n\u2019entra\u00eenera pas les transformations annonc\u00e9es. Il l\u00e8gue une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 affaiblie et fractur\u00e9e. Il faut attendre le tournant des ann\u00e9es 1980 pour que la promesse de modernisation soit enfin tenue. Les r\u00e9formes engagent alors le pays dans des mutations plus rapides qu\u2019aucune soci\u00e9t\u00e9 humaine n\u2019en a jamais connues.
Industrialisation, urbanisation, bureaucratisation, globalisation, migrations ne sont pourtant pas des ph\u00e9nom\u00e8nes propres \u00e0 la Chine ; s\u2019ils y prennent une proportion hors du commun, ils s\u2019\u00e9clairent par le comparatisme. Pour conduire cette d\u00e9monstration, l\u2019ouvrage s\u2019appuie sur les acquis les plus r\u00e9cents de la recherche en sciences sociales alors que l\u2019enqu\u00eate de terrain est d\u00e9sormais possible et les archives pour partie ouvertes.<\/p>\n

Gilles Guiheux est professeur \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Paris Cit\u00e9, au d\u00e9partement des Langues et Civilisations de l\u2019Asie Orientale, membre du laboratoire CESSMA. Socio-historien, il s\u2019est int\u00e9ress\u00e9 \u00e0 la figure sociale de l\u2019entrepreneur et du consommateur. Il conduit aujourd\u2019hui un programme consacr\u00e9 aux formes du travail en Chine contemporaine. Il a notamment publi\u00e9 Les grands entrepreneurs priv\u00e9s \u00e0 Taiwan, la main visible de la prosp\u00e9rit\u00e9 (2002).<\/p>\n
