Surnomm\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0L’Empereur\u00a0\u00bb par ses pairs, il est celui qui popularise le cin\u00e9ma japonais en Occident, avec une trentaine de films et autant de joyaux, qu’il sc\u00e9narise, storyboarde, monte et produit \u00e9galement. Il fait ses classes comme assistant-r\u00e9alisateur sous l’aile de Kajir\u00f4 Yamamoto, et passe \u00e0 la mise en sc\u00e8ne avec La L\u00e9gende du grand judo<\/em> (1943). Apr\u00e8s une s\u00e9rie de polars noirs expressionnistes (Chien enrag\u00e9<\/em>, Entre le ciel et l’enfer<\/em>), Rash\u00f4mon<\/em> (1950) et son audace narrative marquent sa rencontre avec Toshir\u00f4 Mifune, et le d\u00e9but de sa renomm\u00e9e internationale (un Oscar et le Lion d’or \u00e0 Venise). \u00c9pop\u00e9es historiques qui racontent le Japon f\u00e9odal et sa violence (La Forteresse cach\u00e9e<\/em>, Les Sept Samoura\u00efs<\/em> ou encore Kagemusha<\/em>, Palme d’or 1980), drames sociaux (Dodes’kaden<\/em>), odes \u00e0 la nature (Dersou Ouzala<\/em>), variations sur les relations ma\u00eetre-disciple (Barberousse<\/em>) ou adaptations de monuments litt\u00e9raires (Dosto\u00efevski et L’Idiot<\/em> ou Shakespeare avec Le Ch\u00e2teau de l’araign\u00e9e<\/em> et Ran<\/em>), ses films sont des diamants sertis d’humour noir ou d’une po\u00e9sie onirique unique et universelle.
