Au long d\u2019une carri\u00e8re de professeur de litt\u00e9rature fran\u00e7aise qui l\u2019a men\u00e9 jusqu\u2019\u00e0 la chaire \u00ab\u00a0Mar\u00e9chal Foch\u00a0\u00bb de l\u2019universit\u00e9 d\u2019Oxford, Michael Sheringham (1948-2016) a v\u00e9cu en compagnie de la po\u00e9sie fran\u00e7aise, dont il a \u00e9t\u00e9 un merveilleux lecteur. Dans les essais ici rassembl\u00e9s on voit courir comme un fil rouge, du surr\u00e9alisme \u00e0 la po\u00e9sie contemporaine, la question de la subjectivit\u00e9, de ses rapports au d\u00e9sir, \u00e0 la vision, \u00e0 la politique, aux lieux qu\u2019elle investit. Le sujet ne pr\u00e9existe pas \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9criture. Il se montre \u00e0 nous comme un\u00a0\u00ab\u00a0\u00eatre mobile\u00a0\u00bb qui s\u2019invente, s\u2019agence, se d\u00e9place, s\u2019\u00e9vanouit dans la lettre du po\u00e8me, et dans son d\u00e9roulement minutieusement examin\u00e9. Pour l\u2019\u0153uvre d\u2019Andr\u00e9 Breton, pour Desnos, et pour l\u2019esprit du surr\u00e9alisme, la le\u00e7on qui s\u2019en d\u00e9gage est \u00e9clatante. Elle projette un jour nouveau sur des po\u00e8tes plus proches de nous, comme Philippe Jaccottet, Jacques R\u00e9da ou Jacques Roubaud. Elle se refl\u00e8te \u00e0 distance et pour ainsi dire se r\u00e9invente dans les po\u00e8mes de Pierre Alferi, qu\u2019habite le m\u00eame souci, et o\u00f9 r\u00e8gne une semblable libert\u00e9.<\/p>\n
