Many initial problems surface quickly: is it art? Is it literature? What qualifies as a graphic novel and is there a difference comics and graphic literature? How do we read them?<\/p>\n<p>If the term \u201cgraphic novels\u201d has over the course of the recent years somewhat not lived up to its fame in popular culture, perhaps due to an elitist connotation of the term that Charles Hatfield calls the comics\u2019 \u201cpassport to recognition as a form of literature,\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn1\" name=\"_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> it has indeed allowed comics to enter into a realm of authentic literature and be recognized as such in both academic and noneducational spheres. Comics, or as Theirry Groensteen dubs them, \u201cthe bastard genre,\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn2\" name=\"_ftnref2\">[2]<\/a> have managed to preserve their elusive image of a genre that does not quite fit the norm and in which there is also confusion about categories and terms. One of the possible definitions of both terms that best fits the visual ideas they attempt to communicate is given by Ann Miller: \u201cAs a visual and narrative art, comics produce meaning out of images which are in a sequential relationship, and which co-exist with each other spatially, with or without text.\u201d<a href=\"#_ftn3\" name=\"_ftnref3\">[3]<\/a> This definition applies with great aptitude to the majority of comics published up until now. However, what happens when the images in a sequential relationship move online? By what methods does one approach, read and discover graphic literature online and do there seem to be any similitudes to the methods applied to the classical, page approach? In my essay, I will try to elaborate on the methodology of finding indie and alternative comics online aside from the evident and mainstream platforms that host famous online comics. Further on, the questions of how to approach these specific comics will be tackled, and finally, linked to the second notion, I will finish on the methodology of reading the digital comics and on expanding on the ways it differs from the classical reading of a page.<\/p>\n<p>The aim of this research is to show that, while at times obscure in nature, with their linear experimentation, doing away with panels, and open-page layout, digital indie comics offer a read experience that goes further than the traditional physical page graphic literature in a way that provides the reader with an interactive and open-world experience. The methods employed in order to find, read and appreciate these online comics stay similar, but necessitate a real work of research for the reader due to the density of mainstream online comics.<\/p>\n<p>Keywords: <em>online comics, graphic literature, comics theory, digital comics<\/em>, <em>comics studies<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Ana Mujkovic received a bachelor\u2019s degree in anglophone literature and civilization from the University of Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines \u2013 Versailles and a master\u2019s degree in American literature from the University of Sorbonne Nouvelle \u2013 Paris 3. Her first year\u2019s master thesis centered on the representations of the self in alternative graphic literature and her second master thesis was focused on the structure and form of Chris Ware\u2019s <em>Building Stories<\/em>. She is currently working as a high school teacher for the Acad\u00e9mie de Paris and as a <em>professeur vacataire <\/em>at the University of Sorbonne Nouvelle \u2013 Paris 3 where she is doing her PhD under the direction of Prof. Beatrice Pire on the new forms of the (anti)hero figure in contemporary graphic novels as a member of the research unit EA 4398-PRISMES.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Florent Perget<\/strong> (Sorbonne Universit\u00e9) : \u00ab\u00a0Lire et \u00e9tudier de la bande dessin\u00e9e : pratique culturelle populaire ou litt\u00e9raire ? \u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Supposer qu\u2019une bande dessin\u00e9e se <em>lit<\/em>, plut\u00f4t qu\u2019elle ne se <em>regarde <\/em>ou se <em>contemple<\/em>, c\u2019est consid\u00e9rer de mani\u00e8re implicite qu\u2019elle participe du champ de la litt\u00e9rature ou, tout au moins, des litt\u00e9ratures. Penser la r\u00e9ception et l\u2019\u00e9tude d\u2019 oeuvres de bande dessin\u00e9e n\u00e9cessiterait alors, d\u2019une part, de rendre explicites puis de caract\u00e9riser les modalit\u00e9s d\u2019une lecture m\u00e9diatique semblable \u00e0 nulle autre. D\u2019autre part, cela pose \u00e9galement la question de la valeur culturelle du m\u00e9dium, qui d\u00e9termine les rapports que le lectorat entretient avec lui. Or, la nature hybride sp\u00e9cifique de la bande dessin\u00e9e, la faible pr\u00e9sence de textes verbaux et le fait qu\u2019une part importante de sa production ait \u00e9t\u00e9 destin\u00e9e \u00e0 un jeune lectorat ont longtemps inform\u00e9 notre mani\u00e8re d\u2019appr\u00e9hender le m\u00e9dium et frein\u00e9 sa reconnaissance culturelle comme sa l\u00e9gitimit\u00e9 en tant que forme litt\u00e9raire.<\/p>\n<p>Toutefois, port\u00e9e par l\u2019essor des cat\u00e9gories du roman graphique et de la \u00ab bande dessin\u00e9e litt\u00e9raire\u00a0\u00bb<a href=\"#_ftn4\" name=\"_ftnref4\">[4]<\/a>, la bande dessin\u00e9e a acquis depuis le d\u00e9but de la d\u00e9cennie 1990 une valeur culturelle qui semble l\u2019\u00e9loigner de sa dimension historiquement populaire. Forte de cette reconnaissance, elle est progressivement entr\u00e9e, parmi d\u2019autres m\u00e9dias, dans les objets d\u2019\u00e9tude de la discipline <em>fran\u00e7ais<\/em>. Nous observons cependant que cette entr\u00e9e s\u2019est le plus souvent faite au moyen de bandes dessin\u00e9es ambitieuses, exploitant de mani\u00e8re d\u00e9monstrative leurs proximit\u00e9s avec la litt\u00e9rature, et ce au d\u00e9triment de productions industrielles et commerciales, plus populaires, qui se sont vues maintenues \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cart de ce processus.<\/p>\n<p>Cette communication se propose d\u2019interroger les aspects discriminants des processus de l\u00e9gitimation et de didactisation de la bande dessin\u00e9e, lesquels tendent \u00e0 mettre en tension ses dimensions litt\u00e9raire et populaire.
